Choosing a Camera

There are so many digital camera types out there, from the pocket camera we used to bring anywhere back then to the full-size sensor with interchangeable lenses to work with different types of situations and shots. All of them will have the same main function which is capturing still images or recording a video but the level they are able to reach will vary widely. For example, some can be better for still images and some are best for recording videos.

The basic camera is decided by the sensor because this is what captures the image or what’s exposed to light before sending the information to your camera’s processing unit. The sensor size matters a lot but it is not always the bigger the better or rather which seems to fit or meet your expectations the most. Smaller sensors allow for smaller devices such as a compact action camera as well as a cheaper price tag while full-size sensors are difficult to make, pricey, and lead to expensive models as well.

Comparing the camera sensor from full size to cropped or smaller ones, the prominent difference will be the amount of information they capture. The wider the sensor the more light they can capture and the wider the scenery you can see through the camera. They are also better at working with less than adequate lighting to help improve the low-light photos; you can see how far the ISO level can be pushed up reliably compared to a camera with a smaller sensor.

Another tech that can improve the camera’s ability is the autofocus and this part gets better as companies are improving their products almost every year.  A reliable autofocus is fast and intelligent to know what you are trying to capture so our shot is focused on the subject while ignoring the rest of what’s in front of its lens. They are also necessary for video recording for the same reason but different brands have their own tech to offer and each of them may behave differently as well.

What we do think many people often don’t pay attention to when buying a camera is how the device will feel when operated. This may not relate to image quality directly but the way you hold and press the buttons or accessing the menu will overall contribute to how good this specific device is delivering the experience. For example a compact camera is great but they may feel less robust or not as balanced if you will mount larger lenses.

About Fujifilm X E4 and X100V

The choice is all yours, there are more than plenty to choose from and there is no wrong answer since each individual may want a different capacity that they need from the camera. But, we can simplify the options by going with the popular choice or looking from the well-known manufacturers instead because they are easy to find and since most people seem to like them then they probably will work for us as well. If you are still unsure, check the budget and what type of camera you want to buy.

We can shop based on the brand too, especially if you like the styling or have used some of the cameras and know how reliable their systems are, such as with Fujifilm. This company has been around for quite some time offering professional and casual grade cameras. But, unlike many other brands like Sony for example, they are not focusing on the full-frame, high-res market and instead prefer to expand their APS-C models. If you prefer cropped sensors, the company has tons to choose from with varying ability.

Among the promising options you can go for, the Fujifilm X E4 and X100V are two ideal options if you are considering the compactness of the camera along with their ability to capture amazing quality pictures. The X100V is a new iteration of the original camera so the two are very similar but now the X100V comes with a new integrated lens for better performance and this includes the pixel count as well. The X E4 is also claimed to be inspired by the timeless body of X100 but it comes with an interchangeable lens system.

What’s surprising is usually an ILC will be more expensive but not this time because X100V is the pricier choice and having very similar specs we do think you will love the two but, being an ILC also means we have to invest on the lenses. If you will be using different lenses then the answer is clearly the X E4 but if you don’t want the hassle and only want to use one that the camera comes with, X100V is ready to use out of the box. Fujifilm X E4 and X100V Design

As you can see from the sample picture above, the Fujifilm X E4 and X100V are very much similar to each other in terms of styling. What’s prominently different and directly related to the system is that you can find a different hybrid viewfinder which is both optical and electronic on the X100V in while the X E4 only carries the electronic type. The dimension is also not identical with X E4 being the larger one at 128 x 75 x 53 mm compared to 121 x 73 x 33 mm.

In addition, the X E4 is more streamlined in case you prefer the camera without protruding grip like what X100V can offer. But, this design also allows for a convenience when you have to mount a lens, especially if they are larger since there is no grip means there is need to worry whether your finger can slip between the gap they create or not. On the back they also have a similar tilting screen that can be adjusted for different angles; the same 3-inch and the same 1.6M dots.

Fujifilm X E4 and X100V Specs

Let’s move forward to the more important part starting from the basic specs of Fujifilm X E4 and X100V. As it has been mentioned above, they are very much similar to each other. This is because besides being an equally APS-C BSI CMOS, they are also having the same 26MP resolution. The processor is different with X100V using X-Processor Pro 4 instead of X-Processor 4 for the X E4. Since the X100V already has a built-in lens, the one they use is a 35mm F2 lens.

Fujifilm X E4 and X100V Image Quality

On the image quality, we do think the lens options will play a huge role in deciding the overall quality. The F2 lens in X100V is much better than those used in the older cameras, especially on the edge of the lens as it looks sharper now. For dealing with the sun, we do think the two are not made for this application but they are still a great camera. The level of detail you get from them when using the same lens are amazing including for the smooth bokeh.

Fujifilm X E4 and X100V for Video

Next is for the video ability for the Fujifilm X E4 and X100V which we are sure many people will also use for capturing footage. In this part both of them are capable of shooting 4K at 30fps but, there is an important thing to consider here because none of them are suitable for making long footage since the X100V limits the 4K at only up to 10 minutes while the X E4 can record up to 30 minutes.

In addition only the X E4 can tilt the screen up to 180 degrees which means we can’t see our face when recording using X100V. You can use their internal microphone but there are ways to work around it in order to improve audio quality. These two do have an external microphone port but it is different from the standard and probably needs an adapter. You can add a headphone as well using the USB port so we can build them according to your need as the camera is very compact so it can be difficult to fit many things on the body.

Fujifilm X E4 vs X100V

Both of them are ideal for street shooters or as your main camera for taking family photos and similar applications. They are not meant for sport or wildlife but still have a good speed and autofocus moreover with the addition or eye detection. In comparison you have a greater freedom with X E4 as we can use different lenses here to achieve your type or shot but, the latter is having the better viewfinder along with the weather shield body which lacks on the former camera.

You can go well with any of them based on which seems to meet your application the most. Personally, we recommend getting the X E4 if you will be investing in a better lens but if you want the convenient system, the X100V is more than capable for typical daily use.
