SLR or DSLR
Photography is a form of art and while it is has been well-known since long time ago, it seems that only in the last few decade people begin to realize how interesting this field is. With the rapid improvement in technology, we see lots of advanced technology implemented on the image capturing device ranging from those that can be used by anyone to those made especially for professional and enthusiast alike. While for the latter it is a good news to hear, it may be the opposite for beginners.
Camera main function is the same whether it is the one that is designed to take still images to those made to capture video footage even models which main purpose is for security system. However, in the photography world, we currently have several camera models to go and while the most often talked today is between DSLR and Mirrorless, let’s take a moment back where all we have got are SLR and DSLR. We are sure most people especially those who own at least one dedicated camera will be familiar with them.
However, there are also some of us who may already familiar with the term but not yet understand what the actual difference between both since they are actually very similar to each other. The first difference is even though SLR and DSLR are using single-lens reflex technology that utilize an internal reflex mirror to allow user see what the lens see and capture through the optical viewfinder, some DSLR models also offer digital viewing with their rear LCD screen, just like a Mirrorless without a viewfinder.
The second and probably most significant difference between an SLR and DSLR is the sensor because the additional “D” on the model means “digital” which mean it has digital sensor as opposed to the already essentially versatile analog/film cameras. This difference also lead to DSLR storing their images on a memory cards while the SLR is capturing a specific number of images per roll film. In addition, due to the difference in imaging technology, both of them can use different lenses depend on their unique imaging needs and shooting styles.
Most common cameras we used today are also used to record video as long as we don’t have a specific need that require more video recording feature and both regular low-end, point-and-shoot and DSLR or Mirrorless are capable of recording these footage yet, an SLR is not so in general it is not as versatile.
About Canon EOS Rebel T6 and T6i
All those difference is making people more attracted to the new technology and it is not surprising that DSLR is swiping the market quickly to dominate the most manufacturers that offers great cameras today. They are very reliable and mostly can do better than our smartphone cameras which is why people willing to pay much to get one of the best model available. However, if you are not ready yet to leap forward, DSLR is also available in a range so beginner can start from the bottom and gaining experience to improve their skill.
If you are also one of us and currently looking for a DSLR designed for beginners alike or those who just want to own one on their collection, Canon as one of the best company out there is providing enough option for you to choose with of course, a reliable quality. Two of their basic models are EOS Rebel T6 and T6i which is said to be targeted as an entry-level and those who need a better device to capture images than their smartphone camera.
However, they are not a new model anymore because currently they are already more than 3 years old and Canon has released the new step up with their T7i which is taking the entry-level start point to compete with its competitor from the other manufacturers yet, these two are still worth the price especially for user who are not ready to spend more. What you may want to know is these model called as T6 and T6i in the US but outside, they are actually called as 750D and 760D so don’t be confused when seeing a similar item.
Both of them may look similar in a glance but when you pay attention more further, they are actually quite different and in comparison the T6i is more similar to the other version T6s rather than the original T6 and is a higher version, not just one step but probably two step higher than its lower version. Canon EOS Rebel T6 and T6i Design
As you can see from the sample picture above, these two are full DSLR which is bulky and not very travel friendly to be carried around if you are not very careful with delicate items. They are sold in set with the lens or without as you prefers but the one we used as an example above is bundled with 18-55 mm lens. In design they are quite similar to the T5 model and the body is textured with a certain coating as well as have chunky front grip and rear thumb rest.
The control or menu is accessed with the “Q” or quick menu button to view and adjust commonly used setting that we can see clearly through their 3-inch LCD screen which is very vibrant and pleasant to eyes but when you see closely, the one on T6i can be adjusted so user can capture image in different angle featured with touch sensitive screen unlike the fixed, regular screen on T6.
Canon EOS Rebel T6 and T6i Image
Just like when looking for any camera, the first thing we may want to look at is the image quality and to give you a better capability they are coming with 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and 24.2 Megapixel APS-C CMOS respectively but still with the same Digic imaging processor but if the first is featured with Digic 4+ which is a slight upgrade from the Digic 4, the latter is even better with Digic 6 so we can expect to see an even higher image processing ability.
When you compare the image result from both cameras side by side, the difference in quality is easily seen because the T6i is a huge leap from the lower version and we can see that its detail is even greater yet, somehow the noise level stays the same despite the high upgrade pixel on its sensor. They are also using the same iFCL metering system that grouped into 63 segments with the same evaluation options of Evaluative, Centre-weighted, Partial and Spot metering yet, the partial and Spot coverage seem to be more precise.
When you turn off the noise reduction from the raw files both of Canon EOS Rebel T6 and T6i have more visible noise viewed at 100% yet, the gained is fine and there is no banding so we still capable of producing images with a better quality than when using JPEGs. These two models have the same ISO range up to 12800 to allow user take pictures without flash under low light condition.
But, when using them for raw pictures, the image still good with ISO 3200 viewed at 100% yet, it won’t be a real problem until reaching the top limit. The next may not related to the image quality but still important for additional convenience for those who need to work fast because both of these models are already featured with WI-Fi and NFC connectivity which mean we can connect them to a device like smartphone or tablet to transfer files without using cable data.
Canon EOS Rebel T6 and T6i Video
The last but not least from Canon EOS Rebel T6 and T6i is their video resolution since while we don’t particularly purchase them to take moving footage, it will come in handy when you also need to record something along the way and they have the same capability to record footage at HD resolution in 1080p which should be enough for personal use yet, we do feel a little bit disappointed to see that T6i is not yet capable of offering 4K.
Now, let’s compare Canon EOS Rebel T6 with T6i. As you may already know, the difference between both of them are prominently between the sensor and image processing technology as well as the screen because in general the T6i is a better model to give you a better image quality and convenience when it comes to finding an angle to capture images yet, it doesn’t mean the T6 is a bad camera.
Canon EOS Rebel T6 vs T6i
All in all, the decision is all yours to make because we will have different need and budget to spend so it is better to match with what you want and how much you can spend. However, if we are to choose, especially for beginner and first time user, we do recommend to pick the more affordable Canon EOS Rebel T6 since it is already very reliable and we can save more to purchase a far higher model along with our upgraded skill in the future.
